Peter Douglas
Class of 1981
Written by Jessica Kim
Thirty years ago, Peter Douglas came through the doors of Cardozo as a freshman, not realizing the great opportunities that awaited him.
He had many achievements from then on due to his passion for sports. He returned once again as a physical and health education teacher as well as Cardozo’s varsity baseball coach.
Life in Cardozo was nothing less than a great experience and an adventure for Douglas, who graduated in 1981. He played varsity baseball for years. He graduated with an athletic award as well as a Senior Baseball Award. Aside from his achievements in sports, he was also active as an S.O. Executive, in the Dance Program, and SING.
The most memorable moment during his time as a student was when he played in the City Championship. He says, “One of the best thrills and memories I had was playing in the NYC Championship game at Yankee Stadium.”
With a great athletic background in high school he moved on to college, continuing to pursue his passion for sports. Attending several different colleges including Adelphi University, Douglas decided to major in Sports Management. Once he got his degree, he felt he wanted to have an influence on the lives of students. In pursuing a teaching career, he applied for a job in District 26. After being placed in several schools, he finally found himself back at Cardozo in 1987.
“I was fortunate and it was a blessing to work here, a school that I went to,” says Douglas.
Today, as a teacher and coach, he is loved and supported by his students, fellow staff, and his Varsity Baseball players.
“He’s a good coach. He knows what he’s doing and works us really hard. He’s also fun to be around,” said senior Angel Rosario.
“Mr. Douglas is the juice of the Physical Education [Department] that makes it work,” says Ronald Goreki, a fellow P.E. Teacher.
Douglas concludes, “The experience here has been a special one because of the outstanding students and the extremely supportive staff.”
