Class of 1998
Written by Ester Kim
English teacher Julie Galvin, formerly Julie Mingione, graduated from Cardozo High School in 1998 and has been teaching here since 2004. After her graduation in 1998, she attended Stonybrook University for her first two years of college and then transferred to Hunter College to complete her Bachelor’s Degree. She majored in English and received her Master’s degree from Queens College. “When I was a junior in high school I wanted to become a teacher and in college I was the news editor for the newspaper at Stonybrook,” She continued “and I did an internship for a magazine, I didn’t like it, so I went back to my original idea of becoming a teacher.”
She never expected to work at Cardozo. She began working here as a student teacher in 2004. At the end of the term, many English teachers had retired, which left an open teaching spot for her. Though she did not plan on working at Cardozo, she said that she was very happy to get a job here because it was one of her preferred schools for teaching. “I like working here very, very much. I think Cardozo is an open, friendly environment. I’ve always loved my students, and my co-workers are my friends, so that makes it a pleasant place to work,” Galvin said.
Reflecting on her experiences as a student, she says, “I really made good friends, and I’m still friends with them to this day, after ten years.” She also mentioned that the hardest part of being in high school was, “all that boy drama. Even if it was painful and hard, it was a valuable experience and I learned from it. I can still relate to what teenagers are going through but as an adult I can see how everything’s going to turn out, so I can sympathize with them.”
Mr. Muradyan, fellow English teacher and friend of Galvin’s, said “She’s one of the sweetest, most genuine people one could ever encounter. She freely gives up her time and is extremely kind and helpful, not only as a teacher but also as a person.”
