Studio Art (AM1 or AM2)

Taught: Fall and Spring
Level: All Grades
Prerequisites: A1 or teacher recommendation
Description: A curriculum intended to develop fundamental art concepts and skills through projects involving observation and imagination. Students explore potentials of various mediums, including pencil, ink, charcoal, pastel and oil pastels, and through projects such as portraiture, illustration or life drawing. This is a more in-depth art course for interested students.

Drawing and Advanced Drawing (AD1 and AD2)

Taught: Fall and Spring
Level: All Grades
Description: This course will focus on simple drawing skills: basic shapes and forms, anatomy, perspective, and life drawing. Pencil, charcoal, and pen and ink will be the mediums used in this class. This class will be open for students who have a basic interest in drawing and who are not inclined to explore other mediums. This course will fulfill the Cardozo art requirement.

Cartooning (ALC1 and ALC2)

Taught: Fall and Spring
Level: All Grades
Description: This course will focus on the “Art of Cartooning” in all its aspects from ideas to the finished storyboard. Students will create original cartoons as well as utilize styles and ideas from current cartoons. There is no pre-requisite for this course. This course will satisfy the Cardozo requirement for art.

Painting (AP1H or AP2H)

Taught: Fall and Spring
Level: All Grades
Prerequisites: A1 or teacher recommendation
Description: Art history is explored as it relates to the different painting styles and techniques. Painting concepts and skills are developed through such projects as still life, landscape or illustration based on specific periods/styles of painting. The focus of this class is primarily on painting techniques of various periods including Cubism, Impressionism, and Modern and some art history as it relates to the period studied.

Pre-Portfolio (AMP2)

Taught: Fall and Spring
Level:
Prerequisites: Teacher/A.P. recommendation
Description: This class focuses on the development of a student’s art portfolio as preparation for a career in art. Each student will be expected to develop and create original art based on his/her own unique skills. This course will culminate with AOPA in senior year.

Portfolio/Advanced Portfolio (AOP/AOPA)

Taught: Fall and Spring
Level: 11th and 12th
Prerequisites: By department approval only
Description: An advanced course for students seeking to go beyond the curriculum of the offered art classes. Portfolio and various art contests are emphasized as potential projects. Students will be expected to put in extra time in order to fulfill the course requirements. AOP (period 2 only) is the beginning portfolio class followed by AOPA (period 9 only).
